Great Egret & Spanish Moss

The Backstory: we approached this great egret perched high in a tunnel of bald cypress and Spanish moss. It allowed our boat to drift close enough for a few photographs before lifting gracefully away through the trees.

The Backstory: walking on the beach at Seal Rock felt almost magical that afternoon. Everything but the basalt cliffs seemed rather ephemeral, and this photograph reminds me of that feeling every time I see it.

Great Gray at Sunset
Sax-Zim Bog, Minnesota
The Backstory: my first time seeing great gray owls, I had one all to myself for an amazing ten minutes. Watching it hunt – and occasionally lock eyes with me – made the entire trip to northern Minnesota worthwhile.

The Backstory: the morning was bright with fog and the water was still as glass. As it hunted, this heron almost looked like it was drifting through clouds.

The Backstory: Caddo Lake, with its bald cypress and Spanish moss, had long been a bucket-list destination. The first morning of our workshop did not disappoint, with beautiful fog softly drifting across the water.

The Backstory: Seal Rock is known for its dramatic basalt cliffs and seabird colonies. What caught my eye wasn’t the colony’s activity, but the single gull separating itself from the crowd.

The Backstory: Sweet Creek Falls Trail winds past a series of beautiful waterfalls, each with its own character. This one drew me in with its moss-covered rocks and fallen trees framing the cascade.

The Backstory: bright light isn’t always a disadvantage. Here, the white sky emphasized the spoonbill’s soft pink colors and graceful form.
